Design Thinking as A Tool for Self-Improvement

Design Thinking is a concept that can help us to improve any product, process or experience.

By definition, Design Thinking is trying to make something new by creating multiple versions of a product. It requires repeating steps in the problem-solving process to improve early versions of the solution.

Uncovering flaws, challenging previous assumptions, redefining the problems are an indispensable part of the Design Thinking process. So is ongoing testing and prototyping.

The results of Design Thinking can be implemented into the real life as ready products.

Positive side of Design Thinking for self-improvement

To begin with Design Thinking, start fixing a problem at its heart. Avoid unnecessary hesitation and discussing for too long the reasons that are causing the problem. Just get things done to start off. However, pay attention to maintaining high quality work throughout the process. Get over the initial troubles. Move on to the next activity.

In Design Thinking, we should not hold ourselves back trying to justify every negative behavior leading to poor results. We should rather accept who we really are, what we can achieve, understand our self-image and try to get better every day.

Design Thinking is about giving up excuses that we often create in our heads to hide any shortcomings. It allows us to kick start things to get going. If we stop using excuses to justify our negative behaviors and actions, and realize our strengths and weaknesses, then our life will be more satisfying and productive.

Negative side of Design Thinking for self-improvement

Remember that none of the outcomes of Design Thinking are ideal.

Some people do not like it because there is not any pressure of having to make the product right from the start. Neither we put efforts into perfecting the right product before releasing it into the market. Instead, with Design Thinking, we just randomly try to create different multiple versions of a product which are imperfect.

Why do we even need so many imperfect products? Do we really need 10 different styles of high-heel shoes, if we can produce the only one, but a perfect pair? Will the 10 pairs of shoes make the world full of garbage?

Summary

In short, Design Thinking is the process of solving problems in a creative way, learning by doing, while acknowledging that we may create multiple outcomes.

Design Thinking seems to be a great tool not only for creating and improving any product, process or experience, but also for personal self-improvement.

This innovative problem-solving process can also help us to achieve individual goals – do things faster, accomplish more tasks, lose weight or eat healthier

Work hard and you will see your life to become more meaningful sooner than you thought.
