Both business strategy and tactics serve the same purpose – how the business is going to get to where it wants to be in the future. Once the senior management of the company decides on the long-term business aim and medium-term business objectives, it can then decide on the most suitable methods how to achieve these targets.
EXAMPLE 1: To increase promotion of existing products to a new market segment, a marketing tactic of establishing a relationship with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and finding new advertising agency specializing in advertising to young people will need to be accomplished.
Business tactics are day-to-day activities of a business to put its strategy into operation effectively. They are specific goals that guide the daily functioning of a certain department such as the HR department responsible for recruiting workers, or a selected section in the company such as only the sales personnel in the marketing department.
EXAMPLE 2: To raise sales of Product A and Product B by USD$10 million within the next 12 months, the marketing department needs to keep sales staff turnover below 10% in the next 12 months.
In short, business tactics are the daily actions required to achieve the business objectives.
