How to Effectively Introduce Technology into Your Business?

Technology is introduced to businesses mainly in the form of machinery and processes involving information technology (IT). IT is the use of electronic technology to collect, store, analyze and communicate information in, throughout and out of the business.

Computers now provide managers with huge amounts of data, through the use of ‘management information systems’, about the operations of their business. Let’s see how to make it possible.

Steps to introduce technology into a business

There are a few important stages that managers should go through when introducing new technology or upgrading current technology to prevent opposition to change:

1. Analyze how information technology (IT) can be beneficial to the business. Look at the ways it can make the business more effective, efficient and productive.

2. Involve all level-managers and workers in assessing the potential benefits and drawbacks of introducing information technology (IT). Sometimes, better ideas often come from those who are the users of the systems rather than from management.

3. Evaluate different systems and programs available on the market to compare the features, costs and the expected efficiency and productivity gains.

4. Consider the budget available for this system and coordinate with the finance department any money-related approvals.

5. Purchase the chosen information technology (IT) system negotiating its price, any additional fees and payments for necessary upgrades in the future.

6. Plan for the introduction of the new system into the business.

7. Train staff and organize demonstrations to all users.

8. Monitor the introduction and effectiveness of the system. Is it bringing the projected benefits and, if not, what can be done to improve performance?

A business does not always need to use the latest technology in all circumstances as there will be substantial costs and some businesses will simply not handle those additional expenses. So, any decision whether to introduce new technology to the business will have to be carefully planned, analyzed and evaluated.
