10 Ways to Save Money on Transportation

Although some of those tips how to save money on transportation might sound too obvious, give them a try from time to time and you will save a lot of money on gas.

1. Walk or bike to work. Choosing to walk to your workplace can save you a lot of money on gasoline. You can walk, if you live nearby, or take a bike ride instead of driving. It is also much healthier to walk than sit behind the steering wheel.

2. Use only one car. If you and your spouse work relatively close to each others’ workplaces, you can drop one another off every morning. Ask your neighbors or friends, if they happen to go to the same place where you work. You will not have to use your own car, but chip in gas money.

3. Plan getaways and vacations in advance. Careful planning is the key! You can choose shorter routes or fill in the gas at the gas stations with lower prices. Search for high-speed roads that are free of charge instead of paying highway tolls. In Europe, the routes outside the highways can be very picturesque though.

4. Buy winter windshield washing fluid in summer. Winter windshield washing fluid is expensive in winter. If you drive a lot in freezing conditions, buy a few containers in summer and keep them in the basement until the next winter.

5. Choose the optimal means of transportation. Flights are more expensive than trains. Chose to travel by train or by bus, if you are not in the hurry.

6. Do not violate the traffic laws. The tickets happen to piss all of the drivers off. But, if you drive and park carefully, you can avoid being punished by the traffic police.

7. Keep proper tire pressure. According to specialists, too low or too high tire pressure directly translates into higher fuel combustion by approximately 5%.

8. Do not wash your car in the car wash. But make car washing by yourself your weekly routine.

9. If you do not have a car, rethink buying one. It might be cheaper to get to work by bike unless your workplace is really far away. You can rent a car from time to time instead of owning one. City dwellers should seriously consider selling their cars and use alternative means of public transportation.

10. Avoid peak hours and traffic jams. Leave to work earlier to avoid morning traffic jams. You will not only save money on gas, but also save yourself lots of time. In the big cities, traffic jams are more manageable between 6am and 7am rather than between 7am and 9am.
